A journey through history: Britain and Germany declare war on this day in 1939...

On September 3rd 1939 Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister at the time, broadcast a message to the nation that has gone down in the annals of history. It marked the onset of the destruction of one era and the birth of another, the one we live in today. It was truly a revolution of science, philosophy, politics, geography; the rule book was ripped up and we rewrote the rules all over again.

I am going to try and do something that I think will be quite challenging over the next 6 years. I am going to try and follow the Second World War in real time but 60 years on, through newspaper archives, books, the internet and media archives.

I want to follow it one week at a time to get a better perspective of the conflict that had such a massive impact on the world in which we live today. I think it will allow me to digest and appreciate the good and the bad that was done during those years, to understand what our descendents went through, and to understand what we need to do today to fix things. Naturally I will be recording my virtual journey on Kit Chat.

I have started tentatively with the obvious and accessible information resources.

The BBC is a fantastic site for History and the WW2 sub-site is here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/ww2_summary_01.shtml
The Times newspaper also seems to have given some thought to providing archived information http://timesonline.typepad.com/timesarchive/2009/09/unforgettable-the-day-the-war-began.html

Naturally I expect to build up quite an interesting archive of links and information about the war and I will be listing them all here.

What I also would like to do is build a few models along the way that commemorate the events of the 6 years. Well, wish me luck on my time journey!
