Completion of the P-51 Mustang Project!

After many moons of on-off working on the P-51 Mustang project, it has been completed. While I had a few frustrating moments, and the latter stages took longer to complete than I thought, I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. Below is a brief write up of the kit, lessons learned and some photos.

Revell P-51 Mustang project nearing completion!

I have had a relatively PC-free weekend and I have taken full advantage of it by virtually completing the P-51 Mustang project, which I started many moons ago. I thought I would post the latest pics. I still have to finish off a few bits and bobs, such as the decals, but I am broadly happy with the outcome. A more detailed project report will be forthcoming in due course - warts and all! I have certainly learnt a fair amount from this project and that will be an opportunity for another post shortly!

A superb build result for a customer who bought a Spitfire kit from us...

Spitfire KitWe don't often get pictures from customer's kit builds but it is great when we do. Late last year we received an email from a very happy modeller, and it is easy to see why. Below is an extract of the email Sotiris sent us and the photo of a beautifully made Spitfire too.

"The order was received very promptly and provided a lot of enjoyment during the build. See pic of the finished Spit :)"

Kids can do it too ... for pocket money prices!

As many of you Mums (and Dads) know, keeping the kids amused during the school holidays can be quite exhausting and also expensive. So while trying to conjour up new and exciting ways of entertaining my twin boys I had a brilliant idea. Why not let them have a go a making a model aeroplane? With working for The Model Catalogue it is amazing that I hadn't thought about this before. I guess I just assumed that they wouldn't have the ability as they are only six and a half years old and that the whole experience would be a total disaster. How wrong I was!!!

Having checked out the models available I realised that there was quite a selection available for children and beginners. In the end I decided to choose from the range some of which we are currently are offering at half price at only £3.00 each. Those referred to in this article are all pre-painted, have a display stand and also come with the glue supplied. The kits my boys chose were as follows:

Focke WulfFocke Wulf Fw190A MINIKIT by Airfix (A50024) 1:100
ThunderboltP-47 Thunderbolt MINIKIT by Airfix (A50025) 1:144

The boys were extremely excited about the prospect of making the planes and it turned out to be quite an enjoyable activity for all concerned. Obviously due to their age, adult supervision was required but I allowed them to do as much of it as they were able (which was most of it) and they both were absolutely chuffed to bits with the finished product. I felt that the fact that the models were pre-painted helped to produce a very professional finish and they are both very proud of their work. They rated the activity as ten out of ten and now have their models proudly on display and are shown in great detail to any visitors that we have.

All in all, the activity was fun and very inexpensive bearing in mind that everything is included in the kit and we hardly used any of the glue so we have that to use up on other things. This is definitely an activity that we will be doing again. Also with Christmas fast approaching you may consider these as fun stocking fillers.

Gareth W's photo of a his beautiful completed USS Montrose...

A customer of The Model Catalogue, Gareth W, sent me a great picture of his completed model of the USS Montrose last week (Revell 05018). With Gareth's permission I have attached it below. I think you will all agree he looks to have done a fantastic job!

If anyone else has finished any projects recently please don't hesitate to send me a picture of your finished masterpiece so that I can share it with other readers of this blog. All you have to do is ensure the photo image is over 800 pixles wide, is well-lit and is in focus so that the detail can be seen.

North American P-51 D Mustang by Revell No. 04512

A couple of photos to show progress on the Revell P51D project. I glued the cockpit into the right half of the fuselage and then brought the two sides of the fuselage together and glued them together using Revell Contacta Professional (a liquid weld glue). This time I went very slowly, one inch at a time making sure I had each section lined up and stuck sure before moving onto the next section. Often in the past I have taken short cuts and done too much in one go. It always caused problems! This time it was much better and the result is a pretty tidy join with very little sanding work needed to finish off.

North American P-51 D Mustang by Revell No. 04512

I am back at last at my modelling bench! I have still got some unfinished projects, such as the Condor, but I decided to start a new project. I have always had a leaning towards the venerable Mustang P-51 and have had a 1:48 version sitting around for some time now. I decided to finally crack it open.

It is an old Revell Monogram mould from 1977 and a pretty interesting build so far. I know the date and the manufacturer provenance because it has been rather annoyingly marked on one of the rear ailerons with the details.

Here are the pictures so far with some accompanying commentary text.

A customer's scale wooden ship project - really impressive pics...

A customer of The Model Catalogue sent in seven pictures of a project he is working on with his son, which is quite simply hugely impressive. Below is a taster, but for the rest click on the detail link. Hopefully we'll get to see the finished article as well!
